The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Thursday decried the growing culture of authoritarianism by the President Muhammdu Buhari-led government.
Rising from a one day national conference in Abuja, the party vowed to resist what it described as the growing culture of impunity exhibited by the All Progressives Congress, APC.
This was contained in a communiqué read by the National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo, at the end of the conference. In the communiqué the party lamented the “sudden decline in the economy and quality of life of Nigerians.”
The opposition party observed that the Buhari-led government has been characterised by gross violation of human rights, constitutional infractions, invasion of a governor’s lodge and private homes, deliberate interference and instigation of crisis in the legislature.
The PDP stated that arm-twisting of the judiciary, undermining of democratic institutions, such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), nepotism in appointments, abuse of power and clamp down on opposition elements among others have been perpetrated by the current government.
The opposition party called on the international community to note the constitutional infractions, violation of human rights, selective war against corruption, clamp down on the opposition, divisiveness and high-handedness, adding that these were tendencies that posed threat to democracy and unity.
The party leaders bemoaned what they termed lack of direction of the APC government and the growing tension and rancour in the polity, as the consequences of the divisive tendencies of the government.
According to the PDP the anti graft war of the current government is selective which is targeted at he opposition elements and perceived opponents of the government.
